ABUS began in 1924 when August Bremicker and his sons started producing padlocks in a cellar forge in Volmarstein, Germany. Their first product was the Iron Rock padlock, establishing the mechanical-security foundation from which the family business expanded.

The company introduced its first bicycle chain lock in 1931 and launched the distinctive Diskus lock in 1949. A wider door-security programme followed in 1966, extending ABUS beyond portable locks into cylinders, strike plates and additional protection for homes and commercial premises.
