HiKOKI builds on the engineering history of Hitachi Koki, founded in Japan in 1948 to manufacture coal-mining machinery and electric power tools. The early catalogue expanded through metalworking, woodworking, building and steel-construction equipment.

International growth followed, along with cordless development that included the company's first cordless driver drill in 1979. Brushless motors, lithium-ion batteries and low-vibration systems became important parts of later professional tool platforms.

The MULTI VOLT battery system launched in 2017. In 2018 Hitachi Koki changed its company name to Koki Holdings and the power-tool brand became HiKOKI, retaining the same professional engineering lineage across drilling, cutting, fastening, grinding and construction tools.
