Makita was founded in Nagoya, Japan, in 1915 by Mosaburo Makita as a business selling and repairing lighting equipment, electric motors and transformers. That electrical-engineering background preceded the company’s transition into portable tools and provided the technical foundation for its later manufacturing programme.

In 1958 Makita became the first company in Japan to manufacture and sell a domestic portable electric planer. It subsequently concentrated on power tools and expanded internationally, establishing its first overseas subsidiary in the United States in 1970 and developing manufacturing and sales operations across multiple regions.

Cordless systems have become a major part of Makita’s modern identity. Its official history records the launch of a lithium-ion cordless impact driver in 2005 and the 40Vmax platform in 2019.
