STABILA’s measuring-tool heritage reaches back to 1865, when Anton and Franz Ullrich began producing folding rules in southwestern Germany. Their 1886 patent for a spring-loaded folding-rule joint helped establish the familiar practical format used by tradespeople today.

Gustav Ullrich founded a ruler factory in Annweiler in 1889, and the STABILA name was registered in 1929. The company later patented an acrylic-glass vial and became the first German manufacturer of light-alloy spirit levels in 1952.

Further developments include permanently casting vials into level profiles and entering electronic measurement with laser tools in 1994. The current range covers spirit and electronic levels, folding rules, tapes, distance measurers, line and rotation lasers and application-specific measuring accessories.
