Choosing a Site Transformer: What to Check Beyond the kVA Rating

Power Hub / Site Equipment

Buying a site transformer involves more than selecting the largest kVA number within budget. The transformer has to work with the available supply, the equipment connected to it and the way that equipment will be used throughout the day.

Power Hub lists the Elite T10KVAI as a 10kVA single-phase site transformer. That makes it a product to investigate when specifying site power, but the listing’s headline rating is only the beginning of the selection process.

Start with the available supply

Before comparing equipment, establish what supply is available and how the proposed transformer will connect to it. Single-phase and three-phase products are not interchangeable purchasing choices.

Have the person responsible for the electrical installation confirm the supply, connection and protection requirements. Do not assume a transformer of this size can be plugged into an ordinary socket simply because it appears in a portable-equipment category.

Ask about the duty rating

A headline kVA figure does not, by itself, establish the continuous load the unit can support under your intended conditions. Ask for the continuous and intermittent ratings, any operating limits and the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model.

Likewise, do not treat 10kVA as a universal promise of 10kW available for any combination of tools. The equipment’s electrical characteristics and starting demands need to be considered as part of the selection.

Make an equipment schedule

List what will be connected, its electrical requirements and which items are expected to run together. Include lighting and other equipment that may stay on while tools start and stop.

That schedule gives the installer or supplier a practical basis for checking suitability. “Several tools” is much less useful than a list of exact models and their intended operating pattern. It also helps identify whether the outlet arrangement matches the plugs and distribution equipment you plan to use.

Check the complete installation

HSE guidance for construction work recommends cordless tools or equipment operating from a suitable 110V centre-tapped-to-earth supply. The same guidance stresses safe, properly maintained equipment and competent specialist electrical work. See HSE’s guidance on electrical systems in buildings.

That guidance explains a wider system choice; it does not verify the specification or suitability of this particular transformer. Confirm the exact model’s output arrangement, documentation and application with the responsible electrical professional.

Think about handling and positioning too. Weight, access, cable routes and the environment affect whether equipment can be used conveniently in the intended location.

What to confirm for the Elite T10KVAI

The reviewed Power Hub page identifies the model, 10kVA rating and single-phase configuration. It does not provide a complete technical schedule in its main description. Before ordering, confirm input and output voltages, continuous duty, socket quantity and ratings, protective devices, dimensions, weight and connection method.

Questions before you buy

Does 10kVA tell me how many tools it will run?

No. Tool demand, simultaneous use, starting characteristics and the transformer’s duty rating all need checking.

Can I rely on the category name for the output specification?

No. Confirm the exact model’s technical documentation and output configuration.

What should I send with a product enquiry?

Send the model reference T10KVAI, available supply details, equipment list and expected operating pattern. Those details support a much more useful compatibility check.
