Brand heritage and specialisms
Blackfriar traces its origins to the Ostrich Paint and Varnish works established in Bristol in 1894. After eight years there, Ernest Parsons formed his own business, E. Parsons and Co., and introduced the Blackfriar name in 1902.
The young company earned a reputation for woodstains and varnishes before broadening its range. By the 1920s it was also known for black paints supplied to the motor industry for brake shoes used on cars and heavy goods vehicles.
Blackfriar remained family owned for more than a century and joined Tor Coatings Group in 2004. Its current specialist catalogue includes floor, metal, masonry, roof, wood and problem-solving coatings, with preparation, substrate compatibility and application conditions central to a durable finish.
Power-Hub carries Blackfriar across paint, protective coating and woodcare categories. The live category ranking below identifies the strongest areas of the current selection, followed by five featured products available from the store.
