Schill began in 1948 when German engineer Otto Schill developed a small portable cable drum. That practical design established a family business devoted to organising, protecting and deploying cables and hoses across increasingly specialised environments.

The company now produces hand reels, robust rubber and steel drums, spring-driven and motorised systems, hose reels and application-specific solutions for industry, construction, broadcast and live events. Much of the design, component manufacture and assembly remains within its Baden-Württemberg facilities.

Selection depends on cable type and length, connector clearance, drum diameter, load, winding method and environmental rating. A reel used for live power also requires the correct electrical protection and must be operated within its wound and unwound current limits to control heating.
