How Much Cable Fits on an Empty Reel? The ER220 Explained

Power Hub / Cables & Storage

A cable reel can make a long lead easier to store, carry and identify. The buying mistake is to choose a reel by cable length alone. A length of slim signal cable and the same length of a much thicker cable occupy very different amounts of space.

The eLumen8 ER220 listing makes that relationship clear by giving capacities for four cable diameters. If you are organising event equipment, workshop leads or portable cable stock, those figures provide a useful starting point.

Measure the outside diameter

Use the cableโ€™s overall outside diameter when comparing reel capacity. This is different from the conductor cross-sectional area that appears in many electrical-cable specifications.

The ER220 is listed for 130 metres of 6mm cable, but only 25 metres of 13mm cable. That substantial difference shows why a single headline length is not enough to select storage for a different cable type.

Check your cable manufacturerโ€™s data, including bend-radius requirements, before deciding that a reel is suitable. A cable fitting into the available space does not establish that it can be wound around any drum without concern.

Understand the words โ€œtight layโ€

Power Hub describes the capacities as tight-lay figures. Treat them as storage figures based on orderly winding, not as a promise that a hurriedly packed cable will always fit to the same length.

Connectors, winding technique and the way the cable sits on the reel can affect practical use. Allow room to store the cable without crushing connectors or forcing the final turns into place. If your intended length is close to a published limit, check the complete cable assembly rather than buying on the bare-cable figure alone.

Why the auxiliary winder is useful

The ER220 includes an auxiliary winder intended for patch leads or smaller cables. Keeping a short associated lead with the main cable can make equipment sets easier to organise.

For repeat setups, add a clear label identifying the cable type and length. Store ends so their connectors are protected and easy to recognise. A well-organised reel should reduce the need to unwind an unidentified cable simply to work out what it is.

An empty reel is not a powered extension lead

This product is supplied as an empty reel with a blank faceplate. It does not become a rated electrical distribution assembly merely because a connector can be fitted to the plate.

If the intended application involves power, the finished assembly and its components need to be selected and assessed appropriately. Follow the cable and equipment instructions for use, loading and winding. The capacity figures above describe physical storage, not electrical load capability.

Questions before you buy

Is cable included?

No. The ER220 is listed as an empty cable reel.

Does 6mm mean a 6mmยฒ conductor?

No. The capacity figure refers to cable diameter, not conductor cross-sectional area.

Can I calculate a precise capacity for another diameter?

Use the listed figures as a guide and confirm suitability for your actual cable. Do not assume a simple linear conversion will give a reliable capacity.
